Clara Long

Since 1995 I have worked in the field of mental health as both a Registered Mental Health Nurse and a therapist.  I have worked extensively in the private sector as a Nurse Therapist at the Priory Hospital.  I have also worked for the Ministry of Defence (MOD) as an EMDR Practitioner, treating Service Personnel and Veterans. I am currently working in the NHS as a Psychotherapist. I have treated many adults using Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing, (EMDR), including current and ex-servicemen and women. My experience includes providing one to one counselling, using a variety of approaches which include psychodynamic, cognitive behavioural therapy and the pluralistic approach.  I also have experience facilitating a variety of groups; anger management, self esteem, assertion, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and closed loss groups. I have regular supervision, and I am fully accredited and insured for the work I do. This enables me to practice safely and to ensure my clients get the most benefit out of the work we do together.

Counselling, Hypnotherapy and EMDR can help you to address the various psychological issues or problems that we all face and that can interfere with our ability to lead fulfilling lives.  There can be many obstacles to overcome from a simple phobia such as a fear of the dark to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder as a result of experiencing a car accident.

Hypnotherapy

The use of hypnosis to treat emotional problems

This is a process in which you are guided into a deeply relaxed and receptive state. The therapist does this by talking to you and referring to calming suggestions.

Hypnotherapists aim to achieve a level of relaxation which is sometimes known as a trance state. This is something we all achieve in our day to day lives, from daydreaming, to not recalling the drive on a familiar route.

In hypnotherapy the trance state is deliberately encouraged to help your subconscious mind receive beneficial suggestions to help you to achieve your desired goal. Many psychological problems have been treated and have benefited from this gentle and natural process, including:-

- Addiction

- Anxiety Disorders

- Body Image and Weight Control

- Complicated Grief

- Depression

- Phobias

- Past Life Regression

- PTSD

- Relationship issues

- Self Esteem and Confidence issues

- Stress Management

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing

EMDR requires you to be fully conscious throughout the treatment, which uses the brains natural ability to heal by removing unhealthy beliefs and emotions associated with distressing memories.

The therapist helps you to identify an image and thought associated with the memory. You are then guided through the memory and are encouraged to track the therapist’s finger, resulting in the eyes moving from left to right.

The eye tracking movements reprocesses the memory and results in the reduction and/or removal of distressing symptoms such as panic attacks, sleep disturbance, distressing nigtmares and flashbacks.

EMDR has been proven effective in treating many psychological problems and is particularly noted for treating Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, (NICE cg26 2005).

EMDR can be used to treat a range of issues and disorders including:-

- Addiction

- Anxiety Disorders

- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

- Body image and eating disorders

- Childhood trauma (sexual abuse, psychologicalabuse and   neglect)

- Complicated Grief

- Depression

- Dissociative Identity Disorder

- Phobias

- PTSD

- Relationship issues

- Self esteem and confidence issues

- Stress and Anger Management
